Szmyt’s 5 field Goals help Syracuse Overcome Virginia 22-20

Syracuse Defeats Virginia 22-20 The Syracuse Orange host the Virginia Cavaliers in a Friday-night ACC showdown at the JMA Wireless Dome.

Syracuse, New York — Syracuse defeated Virginia 22-20 on Friday night behind five field goals from Andre Szmyt, including the game-winning 31-yarder with little over a minute remaining.

Syracuse held a 16-0 halftime advantage, but Virginia scored three touchdowns in the second half to take the lead 20-19 with little under six minutes left to play.

For the first time since 2018, the Orange (4-0, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) have won their first four games.

They also won this game despite making their first four turnovers of the year.

Dino Babers, the coach of Syracuse, stated, "We're incredibly lucky to come away with the win, and we're happy about that. “The play was not perfect, that’s for sure. But the record is.”

A crucial facemask penalty on a third-and-7 play from the Syracuse 41 that was called on a sack of Shrader let Syracuse drive to the winning field goal.

Following the sixth sack by the Cavaliers, Shrader scrambled 12 yards to get the Orange into position for the game-winning goal.
