revealed recently at Heroes Comic Con in Belgium that he frequently thought the show's viewers viewed him differently from his white co-stars.

He remarked in comments that were recorded on film and have since gone viral online,

"It definitely took a toll on me as a younger kid," "My very first Comic Con, some people didn't stand on my line because I was Black."

According to McLaughlin, part of the fan hatred he faced during the first season of the show stemmed from Lucas's initially contentious relationship with Millie Bobby Brown's character Eleven.

Even still, he observed that his character looked to be less well-liked by viewers than the rest of the cast even after that plotline was dropped.
